It is situated on the Southern Plains and currently has a population of approximately 111,146. It is the principal city of the Midland Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 1st of July the year 2009, The Odessa-Midland, Texas Combined Statistical Area had a population of around 266,941. The inhabitants of Midland refer to themselves as Midlanders.

In the year 1881, the city was founded as a settlement near the midpoint along the Pacific Railroad between Fort Worth and El Paso. Midway was the original name of Midland City, but was later changed due to another Texas city having the same name. Midland is George W. Bush, the former president's childhood home and laura Bush, the former First lady's hometown.

Initially, Midland was a ranching and farming community. Nevertheless, the city's economy went through a big transformation when oil was discovered in the Permian Basin in 1923.
